Celebrities have been persuading us to buy products for many years. We not only see these stars on our favorite television shows and on the movie screen, but we see them on billboards, print ads and on the side of our favorite form of public transportation. We are bombarded with different forms of marketing all day, everyday. These ads turned on an idea light blub and inspired me to search for some of the products that celebrities choose to endorse.
Below are three of my favorite commercials featuring our favorite celebrities:
They Did Rock Us
Inspired by ancient times, Beyoncé, Pink and Britney transform themselves into Gladiators and come together for this three-minute ad for Pepsi. The ad features the pop stars singing Queen’s “We Will Rock You” in what looks like to be the Coliseum. Enrique Iglesias makes a guest appearance as a Caesar look-alike. He is watching over the three women expecting them to battle. Things don’t go as Enrique planned, especially when Beyoncé, Pink and Britney sing, throw cans of soda to the crowd and each enjoy a delicious Pepsi. In the end, a lion approaches Enrique for what will most likely be a tragic end. Britney, you convinced me to switch to Pepsi!
Jennifer Aniston Starts a Virus
Opening with YouTube sensation, Keenan Cahill singing “Like a G6,”(the kid who lip-syncs today’s most popular songs online) Jennifer Aniston surprisingly walks up and asks if Keenan knows any songs about water. Obviously, we know this is going to be about Smart Water. From there, she explains that she can’t just do an ad about Smart Water, but she has to create an ad that will go viral. Complete with grinding babies, the crazy rainbow guy from YouTube and kicking Brad Wollack where the sun doesn’t shine, this ad definitely does the job of going viral. This particular video has over 9 million views. Go Team Jennifer!
James Bond in Drag?
In honor of the 100th annual International Women’s Day, Daniel Craig dresses in drag to promote equal rights for women. While looking wonderful in his heels, thigh highs, dress and blonde wig; a narrator proceeds to give the audience facts about the barrier that still exists between the sexes. Even today, women are still likely to make less than men for doing the same job, more likely to lose their jobs because they want to become a parent and are more likely to fall victim to sexual assault than a man. This ad is a great way to get the word out about inequality between the sexes and raise awareness. Finally, a commercial not demeaning to woman! Thank you James Bond.
Can’t wait to see what the future of celebrity advertising brings!
In the spirit of recycling, in turn, saving the planet, I have decided to revive an old column I used to write for my college newspaper. The column was titled, “Celebrity Top 3” and I used to share and summarize the top three stories in pop culture that particular week. Brace yourself! Below are the top three stories of the week.
Does Jesus vote for American Idols too?
Season ten of “American Idol” is now complete and America has picked a winner…Scotty McCreery. Our new idol received tips and tricks from a mostly new panel of judges. Seasoned judge Randy Jackson and new additions to the panel, which included Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez (Jenny from the Block), offered up advice and guidance to the final two contestants.
In the end, McCreery beat out Haley Reinhart. “I’ve got to thank the Lord first; he got me here,” McCreery said. My personal opinion, we found the American Idol. Yes, her name is Kelly Clarkson. Look for her new album dropping this fall!
Finally our justice system has tamed the most dangerous criminal known to man and woman (social justice)…Lindsay Lohan. It all stemmed from an incident at a jewelry store this past January. The “Mean Girls” star was originally sentenced to 120 days in an actual jail cell. Because of overcrowding in the prison system, Lohan will only serve 20% of her sentence or 14 days under house arrest.
She will be wearing a new piece of jewelry though, a nice new electronic ankle bracelet. Lohan had until June 17 to begin her sentence, but she honorably turned herself in early. Will this house arrest produce and new and improved Lohan? Let’s be real. I miss the days she was hanging out with Britney and Paris.
So is Gayle taking over?
An era has ended. After 25 years, the Oprah Winfrey Show has completed its run. In true Oprah style, she went out with a bang. The finale week was filled with memories, laughs, tears, and celebrities! Some of Oprah’s final words to her fans during her sign off were, “I won’t say goodbye, I’ll just say until we meet again.”
If there are some words you need to share with Oprah, don’t worry she left her email address behind. You can catch her at Oprah@Oprah.com. My next question is, will the next show to fill Oprah’s time slot be called “The Gayle Show?”
Keep an eye out for the top three celebrity stories of the week here, every Thursday! I am looking forward to sharing celebrity and pop culture stories in the future!
As a society, we are rarely shocked these days. We have become immune to seeing celebrities flip out at the paparazzi, party till the wee hours of the morning and even some stars accidently showing their ‘Britney’ while getting out of a car. But there are some stories that really get us talking.
Below is a list of a few of those stories that put the shock back in shocking.
Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift
This shocking moment occurred on an evening that was supposed to be full of happiness for Miss Swift. Last year at the MTV Video Music Awards, Swift won for Female Video of the Year.
As she was accepting her award, Kanye West jumped up on stage and announced “Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.” Seemingly ruining Taylor’s night, Beyoncé saved the day by letting Taylor come up on stage and finish her acceptance speech.
Tiger Woods hitting multiple “holes in one”
It seemed to be a match made in heaven. In 2004, Tiger Woods married former Swedish model and nanny, Elin Nordegren. They had two beautiful children and a life that others dreamed of having.
Late one Thanksgiving evening, Woods was found lying on the ground next to his Escalade with injuries to his face. Why? According to “Us Weekly,” his wife found out that he was cheating on her with not one, but up to 13 women. Elin, he totally deserved to be beaten with that golf club…you go girl!
Larry, you are the father
Larry Birkhead was the former boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith. When Smith unexpectedly passed away in 2007, the main question that arose was who would get custody of Dannielynn, Smith’s young daughter. There were many contenders: Howard Stern (Smith’s lawyer and longtime partner) Larry Birkhead (Smith’s ex-boyfriend) Howard Marshall (Smith’s ex-husband) and Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt (Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband who had an affair with Smith) among many others.
After a long court battle, Birkhead was proven to be Dannielynn’s real father. His name is now listed on Dannielynn’s birth certificate.
Britney and Justin: The Breakup
Even though this couple has been separated since 2002, I am still impacted by this breakup. Britney and Justin were the couple next door. They met on the “Mickey Mouse Club” and both stepped into the role of pop stars. Dating for two and a half years, the couple broke up because Spears allegedly cheated on Timberlake with her chorographer, Wade Robinson.
As a result of the breakup, Timberlake decided to spill the beans and tell the world that he slept with Spears before marriage. Remember, Spears wanted to wait until she was hitched? Timberlake also went on to write the song, “Cry me a River,” which had a guest appearance of a woman who was a striking resemblance to Spears in the music video. This breakup also produced Spears’ single “Everytime,” in which she attempts to apologize to Timberlake. Even though these two have gone their separate ways, I still dream of the day when they will reunite.
Saturday, May 21 is a special day in hip-hop history; it is the birthday of Notorious B.I.G. This hip-hop superstar was known by many names including: Biggie Smalls, Big Poppa and The Black Frank White. In the early 90s, Christopher Wallace, which was the name given to Biggie at birth, took the hip-hop industry by storm. Before becoming a star, Biggie Smalls had a rough childhood growing up in Brooklyn, New York. He started dealing drugs at 12 years old, which caused him to spend some time behind bars.
In 1994, Biggie finally got his break and released his first album titled, “Ready to Die” on Puff Diddy’s (on purpose) Bad Boy record label. The album included such memorable hits as “Juicy” and “Big Poppa.” Biggie’s second album titled, “Life After Death” gave us such tracks as “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money, Mo Problems,” which we still hear at clubs today. Biggie was even recognized for his work by being nominated for four Grammy Awards.
In honor of Biggie, I decided to re-watch the movie “Notorious,” which chronicles his life before and during his fame and ends with his tragic death. What’s interesting about this movie is that it also shows the rise to fame of Puffy, Lil Kim, and Faith Evans.
One of my favorite parts of this film is when Biggie is simply rapping on the streets, before he had a record deal. A woman named Kim Jones spotted him on her way to work. She was watching him like she knew he was eventually going to be famous. Kim Jones began an affair with Biggie and she secured a record deal out of the relationship. Kim Jones eventually became Lil’ Kim.
At the early age of 24, Biggie was in California promoting his “Life After Death” album. After leaving a club, he was tragically shot on March 9, 1997.
Biggie summed up his rise to fame in a five-minute song titled, “Juicy.” The song chronicles his life from living on the streets of Brooklyn to becoming a major success with his hip-hop career. The first line of the song states, “It was all a dream.” Considering how short of a time Notorious B.I.G was in the music business and our lives, it did seem like it was all just a dream.
Happy Birthday Biggie Smalls, we miss you.
Nowadays, the celebrities aren’t the only ones in the spotlight…their babies are! They haven’t been in any movies, on television shows, or in magazines. Celebrity babies have become famous because their parents are stars, but being cute doesn’t hurt either.
We are so invested in celebrity babies that we know them by their first names, we buy the magazines right after they are born, and we want to know where they shop. For example, there is a website dedicated to Suri Cruise’s clothing choices: http://suricruiseclothes.blogspot.com/.
While all of the famous babies are special in their own way, some of the babies are destined to follow in their parent’s footsteps. Listed below are the future stars of Hollywood.
No Doubt’s lead singer, Gwen Stefani and the front man of Bush, Gavin Rossdale, gave birth to their first son, Kingston on May 26, 2006. We first found out about Kingston when his mom yelled out to the audience at a concert, “I want you to sing so loud that the baby hears it.” “Us Weekly” confirmed the story.
With these two rock stars as parents, how can Kingston not be destined to be the lead singer of a rockin’ rock band? Being spotted in fashionable suits with epic mohawk haircuts, he is being groomed to be the next Grammy award winning artist!
Adopted by Angelina Jolie on March 10, 2002, the world was introduced to Jolie’s first of six children. Obviously being in the presence of Angelina Jolie, some of that acting talent should be rubbing off. And with the addition of Brad Pitt to the family, Maddox already is an unstoppable force in Hollywood.
Along with an acting career waiting for him, I could see him becoming a humanitarian, just like his parents. Maddox has seen more of the world then some adults! Spending Halloween in Hungary, Christmas in Paris and weekends in Venice, Maddox is living every baby’s dream!
Born on April 18, 2006, Katie Holmes clone, also known as Suri, is the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Suri was surrounded by controversy and the musings of tabloids before her birth. With rumors swirling of a Scientology “silent birth” and the questioning of her existence, Suri was born into the spotlight.
We finally met Suri on the cover of “Vanity Fair” on the October 2006 issue. Even today, Suri is constantly in the press for her fashion choices. I must say myself that she dresses better than I do. We can see Suri rocking the runway or designing clothes (just like her mom) at future Fashion Weeks to come!
Celebrity babies are fun, cute and offer us a happier side to the world of entertainment. We love to see what they are up to, where they are getting their cool baby toys and what funny things they will do next. Remember when Suri picked up the X-rated gummy bears? I can’t wait to see where you end up in the future.

Now is the time of year when students are graduating and heading off into the “real world.” Right before graduating from college, my friends and I would reminisce by kicking around our favorite “Remember Whens.” In honor of all the graduating students, we want to share our favorite celebrity remember whens.
Remember when Paris, Lindsay, and Britney were friends?
Towards the end of 2006, Britney Spears was single and ready to mingle. Spears teamed up with Paris Hilton, who was known for dancing on tables and Lindsay Lohan who was a veteran to the party scene. It was the hot mess express coming through.
The girls were seen at clubs, cruising around all night and showing up at celebrity hot spots like the Beverly Hills Hotel. While many expected this behavior from Hilton and Lohan, many were surprised to see Spears alongside them. She is a mother of two boys. Sadly, the dream team couldn’t last forever. Spears ended up in rehab and in an emotional blackout, Hilton was thrown into the slammer, and Lohan was incarcerated and tossed into rehab!
Remember when Ben Affleck was going to marry J.Lo?
We all recall when Ben Affleck tried to fool us by marrying Jennifer Lopez. I’m not saying he wasn’t good enough for her, but their relationship felt weird. Dubbed by the media as “Bennifer” the couple attracted worldwide media attention when they began dating in 2002. Meeting on the set of “GiGi,” the couple was soon engaged and set to marry in September of 2003. A few hours before the ceremony, the wedding was called off and they officially split in January 2004.
We have to give it to these two; they did last longer than anyone ever imagined. J.Lo made sure we would remember “Bennifer” forever. Affleck made a cameo appearance in her “Jenny from the Block” video and she even wrote a song for her man, titled “Dear Ben.” A classy slow jam, J.Lo proclaims lyrics such as “I love you, you’re perfect/a manifestation of my dreams.” I bet Affleck’s current wife, Jennifer Garner isn’t a fan of “American Idol” anymore.
Remember When Ashlee Simpson got caught lip-syncing on SNL?
In 2004, Ashlee Simpson, sister of Jessica, was the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live,” the keyword being live. Simpson was set to perform a different song, but “Pieces of Me” started playing instead. Suddenly the audience heard Simpson singing but she wasn’t moving her lips! Gasp!
When Simpson realized what happened, she began to move awkwardly and then just walked off stage. Cut to the end of “Saturday Night Live,” Simpson and host, Jude Law, attempted to smooth this over. “What can I say it’s live TV,” said Law, while Simpson tried to blame her band. This was the beginning of the end of Simpson’s music career.
While there are thousands of “Remember Whens” that could be shared, here are just a few of my favorites. Here’s to looking forward to many more celebrity moments that we won’t forget. Remember celebrities, we are watching.
Debuting on The WB network on January 20, 1998, “Dawson’s Creek” was a coming-of-age teen drama that followed the lives of four sophomores growing up in Capeside, Massachusetts.
At the time of its debut, the show portrayed many risky storylines that included a student-teacher relationship, a wife cheating with her coworker, teen sex, and gay teens. One unique thing about Dawson’s Creek was the character’s vocabulary. They used words in their dialogue that some adults don’t even utilize.
Lasting six glorious seasons, we followed these characters from high school, through college, and five years into the future. Being a huge fan, this show helped me understand my teen years, I felt that I was right alongside Joey Potter. With that being said, let’s see what Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jen have been up to in recent years.
James Van Der Beek – Dawson Leery
After Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003, Van Der Beek is now married to his business consultant Kimberly Brook. The couple has a daughter named Olivia. As for his acting career, Van Der Beek was off the radar for some time. He made guest appearances on many television shows such as, “Ugly Betty,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “One Tree Hill.” Van Der Beek is now trying for a comeback. He has a number of short films on deck and appeared in Ke$ah’s “Blow” music video.
Katie Holmes – Joey Potter
If you don’t know what Katie Holmes has been up to, you must live under a rock. In 2005, Holmes started dating movie star Tom Cruise. Many thought the relationship was a publicity stunt, but they may be in it for the long hall. The couple married in 2006 and are now raising a five-year-old daughter, Suri. Holmes has been steadily working as an actress, most recently playing Jackie Kennedy in the controversial mini-series, “The Kennedy’s.” Despite what critics say, she was a spitting image of Jackie and did a fantastic job.
Joshua Jackson – Pacey Witter
Since wrapping “Dawson’s Creek, ”Jackson has starred in many lesser known, but great films such as, “One Week,” “Americano” and hosted “Pacey-Con 2010.” He hit television gold again with a staring roll on Fox’s “Fringe,” playing Peter Bishop. Jackson is currently dating actress Diana Kruger and lives in Vancouver where he films “Fringe.”
Michelle Williams – Jen Lindley
Williams has had quite the ride since Dawson’s said farewell. Since 2003, she has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in “Brokeback Mountain” and Best Actress in “Blue Valentine.” Meeting on the set of “Brokeback Mountain,” Williams began dating Heath Ledger. The couple had a daughter, Matilda in 2005. On the horizon, Williams has snatched the role of a lifetime, playing Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn.” Keep a look out for this movie!
Even though “Dawson’s Creek” hasn’t been on the air in eight years, it will forever live in our hearts. You can purchase the entire series in a box set. I recommend that you do, the show is timeless.
